The Russian Sputnik V vaccine protects against the British strain of COVID-19 just as effectively as against the usual one. This was announced on Friday, March 12, by the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko.
“Our specialists have conducted a study of the neutralizing activity of the blood serum of volunteers vaccinated with Sputnik V against the“ British ”strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. According to the results of the study, the level of neutralizing antibodies to the British strain does not significantly differ from the level of neutralizing antibodies to the original SARS-CoV-2 strain, ”he said.
Earlier, on December 21 last year, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev said that the Sputnik V vaccine is effective against the new COVID-19 strain.
Later, on December 24, 2020, the director of the Gamaleya Center, Alexander Gunzburg, confirmed the effectiveness of Sputnik V against the British strain of COVID-19.
A new variant of the coronavirus was discovered in the UK at the end of 2020. The British strain of COVID-19 has been identified in more than 40 countries.
